Ok, I'll be the fist to admit, that when I first started my quest to make money using the internet, I penny pinched? I was already in debt and was trying to curb any and all outgoings. But at the same time I dearly wanted to create a sustainable income via the net and had fell for the much hyped "article marketing" route and web 2 building plan.
Basically my plan, when I first started out some two years ago, was to create a sustainable income with as little investment as possible, well actually to tell the truth, little means none at all. All of my internet marketing efforts would be based around submitting articles to as many directories as possible and building Squidoo lens and hubpages etc. Everything I planned would cost me zilch, nothing and all of my profits would swell within my bank. I know now that saving the pennies cost me the dollars.
For starters lets consider the article marketing route. This is a viable option to make money using the internet. You can submit your article to many directories for free. You get your site advertised and free links. But this is a slow old process, it is a great way to advertise but it can take quite some time for your article to get published. That's if it gets that far, there is, after waiting seven days upwards, the possibility that your article will be rejected. Do you know that the true power of article marketing only kicks in after you have submitted at least 250 articles to at least one directory? On another pen name I used to try and submit I was also working full time) at least 3 articles a week. Do the math to work out how long, for it to become effective. Now instead I could have been using PPC to market my affiliated products. Instant results and targeted!!
What about my VR (Virtual Real Estate) I was building web 2 properties, some were great for ranking in the search engines, but none of this property was mine. This was like living somewhere rent free. I had to abide by everyone else's rules and suffer my work being plastered with they're banners and advertisements. If my site fell out of favor with them, then zip it could be gone in a flash and me evicted so to speak. Instead I should have been investing my time and effort into building and running my own domains, somewhere where I made the rules and profited solely from its existence. Web 2.0 is great, but only terms of promotion for your main money sites, that you actually own. It is bad practice to build your entire empire around such a fragile network.
The funny thing about all this, was even though I felt like I was being frugal with my money by using all these free marketing tips, a lot of those saved $$$$ went on $47 EBooks, that promised to show how I could create a $1999 dollar a day business for next to nothing. I was finding that I would be purchasing anywhere, up to 5 or 6 of these a month, that's over $280.
To make money using the internet you have to get out of the whole "everything on the internet is free" mentality. I finally realized, that to create a true sustainable and very handsome income on the net you have to treat it much like an offline business. It needs feeding and some form of investment to grow. If I had redirected the $280 plus a month, into decent tools and training I would have saved myself 2 years of hard fruitless work. Learn by my mistake. There are certain things out there that will grow your business beyond recognition and I'm 99.9% sure it won't be the $47 clickbank EBook.
